Throughout the summer, hundreds of volunteers will re-create famous and obscure works of art, bringing to life scenes that depict artistic and theatrical traditions from around the world. With the help of scriptwriter Dan Duling and a dedicated staff, she has brought fun and originality to the pageant, while still respecting the traditions of the past. In 1933, the “Spirit of the Masters” pageant, as it was called, was actually a parade, with a motley crew marching downtown along Coast Highway toward the festival. Some fire and flood damage in 1993 and 1994 threatened the festival, and one board voted to move the whole kit and caboodle to San Clemente in 2000.
