Police yesterday said they had received a “limited response” after a fresh appeal for public help with inquiries into the theft of a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece worth up to £40m. Fewer than a dozen callers are understood to have got in touch after an appeal on BBC’s Crimewatch programme to identify a man wanted in connection with the theft of the Madonna with the Yarnwinder which was taken from Drumlanrig Castle, near Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway, in August 2003. Police retrieved the 500-year-old artwork, valued between £15m and £40m, in a raid on a solicitors’ office in the centre of Glasgow last November.
