The exhibit is being set up now in two galleries at the museum and will open to the public on Saturday, Jan. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that many of the mechanisms are life-sized and fully operational. Visitors may touch and set them in motion, combining a fascinating hands-on experience with an exploration of the principles he employed to create each machine. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children; there is an additional $5 charge per person to see the Leonardo da Vinci exhibit.

With Van Gogh opening tomorrow at the Royal Academy , it was striking how many people who responded to my posting the other day about the post-impressionists were inclined to question his status. Would I rather stand among the crowds gawping at the Sistine chapel ceiling or in a silent museum contemplating a little-known work by Sebastiano del Piombo ?
