Recreating the amusement parks of the earlier 20th century, the float of the Cal Poly campuses in Pomona and San Luis Obispo depicts the era of timeless wooden rollercoasters, original carousels, boardwalks, electric bumper cars and entertaining fairway games. The theater’s Art Deco tower with starburst crown, the three-dimensional marquee and the ticketing kiosk are noted elements of the theater’s design and are recreated on the float. Adding to the tableau are the Hollywood sign, the Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Griffith Park Observatory and the Watts Towers. The float reflects South Pasadena’s love of the outdoors and its focus on the family, symbolized by a young boy in his discovery of a family of musical frogs right in his own backyard.

A curator at the Louvre Museum in Paris has stumbled upon some unknown drawings on the back of a painting by Leonardo da Vinci that look like they might be by the Italian master himself. The extraordinary find was made by chance, when Louvre staff unhooked Leonardo’s ‘The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne’ from the museum wall as part of a broad programme of study and restoration of paintings by Leonardo, including the ‘Mona Lisa’. It was such an astonishing discovery that other Louvre staff present at the time could not believe it and initially said the marks on the wood must be stains. After the initial find, the museum conducted detailed tests on the back of the painting. It said the drawings recalled some of Leonardo’s known works and suggested that the child and lamb could have been sketches for the painting on the other side of the piece of wood.

Taking the subway instead of a taxi to the airport isn’t all that hard and the cost difference is enormous ($38). The program, which alternates feast and fast for three days before travel, was developed at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois to help military personnel make quick adjustments when they are deployed halfway around the world. For years to come, you will be able to hear the Australian accent of that barmaid in Adelaide, savor that lemon gelato from Rome, and feel the biting Icelandic wind on your cheek. The weirder, the better When traveling I like to zero in on things that help me enjoy the moment and will keep their appeal when I’m back home. I’ve got a world-class collection of absolutely worthless junk, including an egg with a coat of shellac that says “Ecuador,” a battery-operated plastic rat from Vietnam, and a caribou from Quebec that sings “O Canada” when you press its nose. Just sleeping in another bed, eating a meal cooked by someone else, and being pampered by the staff of a nice inn can be refreshing - even if it’s all just around the corner.

The baggage handlers and maintenance staff walked off the job on Monday to protest over negotiations with CAI, the group of investors that plans to relaunch a smaller, more efficient Alitalia next month. Referring to the stranded passengers, Matteoli said on the information he had received, it seemed that the difficult situation would be resolved quickly with the least possible discomfort to travellers. Alitalia buyers signed an agreement on 12 December concluding the takeover of the insolvent carrier’s main assets, paving the way for the sale of a stake to Air France-KLM Group or the German carrier Lufthansa. CAI’s top executives have said they hope to propose their choice of a foreign partner to the consortium’s board by the end of the year in order to have a deal in place when the airline is formally relaunched on 13 January.
