The Codex Atlanticus, the largest collection of drawings and writings by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, has tested negative for mould, officials said Tuesday, allaying fears that the Codex had suffered damage. The central institute for the conservation and restoration of book heritage conducted the tests for the library. The collection, which reflects every aspect of Leonardoâs interests, was originally compiled by the sculptor Pompeo Leoni at the end of the 16th century. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday the public artwork by Olafur Eliasson that put four waterfalls in the East River and New York Harbor brought in an estimated $69 million US for New York City. The curtain will fall on two of Broadway’s recent stalwarts in the new year, as the musicals Hairspray and Monty Python’s Spamalot close up shop in January. Leonardo da Vinci School will host a two-day electronic waste collection effort from 6 a. The collection will support the school’s special education arts program, classroom field trips, school gardens and environmental learning. In the three years since the school started holding the events, it has collected more than 350,000 pounds of electronic waste. Last year, da Vinci earned the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Partnership Award. The collection will accept electronic items such as computers, monitors, ink cartridges, VCRs, television sets, radios and cell phones. The school is at 4701 Joaquin Way, near Freeport and Stacia Way in the Hollywood Park neighborhood.

The Biblioteca Ambrosiana commissioned a microbiological analysis of the document after some scholars warned last year that the Codex had sprouted mold. The library said Tuesday that the study found black stains that seemed to be mold were in fact caused by mercury salts that had been added to protect the Codex from just such a “biological and microbiological onslaught. This exhibit, a comprehensive collection of the art and feats of science and engineering accomplished by the artist, has traveled over 5,000 miles, all the way from the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence, Italy, making this the first time the exhibit has ever been in the United States. The four-part exhibit consists of paintings — some borrowed from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence — interactive activities, a Leonardo da Vinci Café and examples of da Vinci’s machines and architecture, such as a working model of the human flying machine based on his original conceptual drawing. The two paintings on display in the exhibit, “Leda and the Swan” and “The Virgin and Child with St. Anne” is in Paris, and the copy at the Tech Museum was done by his favorite disciple, Gian Giacomo Caprotti, who began working with da Vinci when he was 10 years old. On the day that life preservers are featured, the table used for arts and crafts is made into a small river, and there is a competition to see who can keep the da Vinci action figure afloat the longest. In addition to the main exhibits, the Tech Museum has a specific café and gift shop for the exhibit.
