The Birmingham Museum of Art is presenting an exhibition of rarely seen da Vinci drawings, many of which will be in the United States for the first time ever. The exhibit features sketches, including Madonna of the Rocks (circa 1483), reputed to be the ”most beautiful drawing in the world. Drawing on the holdings of more than 60 institutions and collectors, the Albertina museum is presenting 50 canvases along with 100 watercolors and drawings to give a sense of Vincent van Gogh as both painter and draftsman. To mark the centenary of the man who made ”the decisive moment” one of the medium’s defining concepts, the Art Institute of Chicago this weekend opens a show of Cartier-Bresson photographs as well as paintings, prints, drawings and photographs by artists active in Paris during the 1920s and ’30s. Topic: leonardo da vinci, leonardo da vinci paintings - World’s first cyber heart hailed as revolution for surgeons (Daily Mail)

The 3D computer model was developed by consultant cardiac anaesthetist Sue Wright and surgeons at University College Hospital — and is so realistic it can be ‘operated’ on. Experts say the technology is the biggest advance since Leonardo da Vinci transformed understanding of the heart 500 years ago. Doctors can ’slice’ through the model displayed on a computer screen to show the internal structures of the heart as well as blood flow. A stunning piece of technology, and if it benefits the surgeons, perhaps their will be other ‘organs’ reproduced in this way for use by students too.

Art can be the best painkiller 19 Sep 2008, 0016 hrs IST, ANI (The Times of India)- About: leonardo da vinci, leonardo da vinci paintings

While art is known to express pain in the most beautiful way, a new study has found that looking at a striking painting can offer a distraction from physical pain. The research team headed by Professor Marina de Tommaso at the Neurophysiopathology Pain Unit questioned a group of men and women to pick the 20 paintings they considered most ugly and most beautiful from a selection of 300 works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli. The volunteers were then asked to contemplate either the beautiful paintings, or the ugly painting, or a blank panel while the team zapped a short laser pulse at their hand, creating a sensation as if they had been pricked by a pin. The participants rated the pain as being a third less intense while they were viewing the beautiful paintings, compared with when contemplating the ugly paintings or the blank panel. Electrodes measuring the brain’’s electrical activity also confirmed a reduced response to the pain when the subject looked at beautiful paintings.
