The exhibit was the first time the drawings have been collectively shown outside the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, and the display couldn’t have been done without months of planning and some high-tech help in the form of climate-controlled frames. It includes 11 drawings and Leonardo’s Codex on the Flight of Birds, an 18-page notebook which had never been shown in the United States. Thick magnifying glasses are available for visitors to truly get a sense of the detail Leonardo packed into the drawings, some of which are nearly complete and others that seem like quick doodles. The group of drawings is the latest coup for the Birmingham museum, which hosted a 15-week blockbuster Pompeii exhibit last year. Starting as a fortress, it was eventually transformed into a palace until the establishment of absolutist rule led to the sudden transfer of the court to Versailles, and finally in 1793 the Louvre became the prototype of the modern art museum. It was also part of the French president’s 15-billion-franc program to provide a series of modern monuments to symbolize France’s central role in art, politics and world economy at the end of the 20th century. Critics felt the ultramodern design of the glass pyramid with its steel connections and rods, was in stark contrast to the classical architecture of the Louvre. Excavating the plaza and constructing underground linkages to the existing wings of the museum, was a respectful gesture to the existing classical structure. Natural light brought in through the glass pyramid reduces the use of energy while providing a dramatic view of the sky and the outline of the buildings around the courtyard. An added bonus that surfaced in the process of excavating the plaza in preparation for the construction of the underground museum was the discovery that the site once contained a moat that was land filled by King François in 1528, thus sealing in thousands of objects that were used for more than seven centuries by Parisians.

But can one’s faith in God really ease pain? The scientists found that the Catholics seemed to be able to block out much of the pain. And, using the latest brain-scanning techniques, they also discovered that the Catholics were able to activate part of the brain associated with conditioning experience of pain, the Daily Mail reported. In fact, in the experiment, the Roman Catholics told the scientists that looking at the painting of the Virgin Mary actually made them feel “safe, taken care of and calmed down and peaceful”. SAN JOSE, CA (KGO) — A rare exhibit of legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci opens at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose Saturday. It is a world premiere that features da Vinci’s art, science and engineering works. A crew of 20 artisans from Florence, Italy came to San Jose to prepare the show. Many of the models and drawings are created from da Vinci’s original notebooks. The show runs through early January.
