The final days (Kerrville Daily Times)(leonardo da vinci, leonardo da vinci paintings)

In a small country church west of Kerrville, Leonardo Da Vinci’s depiction of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ came to life. Da Vinci’s famous 15th century mural portrays the reactions of shock and dread on the faces of each disciple when he hears that one of them will betray Jesus. The final days of Jesus Christ were acted out by members of the Hunt United Methodist Church Thursday. On Thursday, Christians around the world participated in Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday services, which commemorate the washing of the disciples’ feet by Jesus, the Last Supper with the Apostles, the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane and the betrayal of Christ by Judas Iscariot. This Sunday, observant Christians will flock to local churches to remember the miracle of Easter the resurrection of Jesus. Throughout history, no other death has been as influential as the death of Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago. read more

Wesleyan’s Last Supper to get $15,000 restoration (Macon Telegraph)(leonardo da vinci, leonardo da vinci paintings)

Dust and grime coat the oil painting, an early 20th century copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The painting, which is 5 feet 10 inches by 11 feet, has been in storage at Wesleyan College for years to prevent further damage. The Last Supper is the most expensive painting to be restored at Wesleyan since 2002, when the college started its Adopt-a-Painting program that allows donors to restore a painting of their choice. Wesleyan’s copy of The Last Supper was painted by an Italian artist in 1929 at the request of Wesleyan donor Samuel Candler Dobbs of Atlanta. Dobbs and his daughter saw the original masterpiece in Italy, and he thought Wesleyan should have a copy, according to the August 1950 Bulletin of Wesleyan College. The restored painting is planned to hang in a future chapel to be built on Wesleyan’s campus, said Susan Welsh, director of communications at the college. read more

Experts link Leonardo da Vinci to chess puzzles in long-lost treatise (The Oakland Press)(leonardo da vinci, leonardo da vinci paintings)

Experts say the Renaissance genius, whose interests included painting, mathematics, music, engineering, anatomy and botany, may have illustrated the puzzles in a long-lost chess treatise recently recovered in the library of an aristocratic family in northern Italy. The manuscript was penned around 1500 by Luca Pacioli, a mathematician and friend of Leonardo, and some experts believe the artist may have drawn the elegant pieces that illustrate the chess puzzles discussed in the treatise. The treatise, “De Ludo Schaccorum” — Latin for “Of the Game of Chess” — includes more than 100 chess problems that challenge the player to reach checkmate in a certain number of moves. Rocco said the futuristic style of the chess pieces is in sharp contrast with the way other pieces were represented at the time. read more
